How to make chocolate cake.

Ingredients:

For the cake:

     

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk (or plant-based milk for a vegan version)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 cup boiling water

For the chocolate frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (or vegan butter for a vegan version)

  • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk (or plant-based milk for a vegan version)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

    1. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  1. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed until well combined, about 2 minutes.

  1. Reduce the mixer speed to low and gradually add the boiling water to the batter. Mix until smooth. The batter will be thin, but that's okay.

  1. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.

  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

  1. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool completely.

  1. To make the chocolate frosting, beat the softened butter in a mixing bowl until creamy.

  1. Add the cocoa powder, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to the bowl. Mix on low speed until the ingredients are combined. Then, increase the speed to medium-high and beat until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.

  1. Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of chocolate frosting on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with the remaining chocolate frosting.

  1. Decorate the cake as desired with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries.
